Somehow, in the two months I've been out of college, I've learned some things about life that rocked my world a bit.
1. Your job coming out of college is probably not going to be what you expected. It will be a blessing or a lesson, but remember, a job is better than unemployment.
2. A lot of people in the "real" world don't care about anything you did before your first full time job out of college. It doesn't matter how much money you raised, what community you impacted, or how many people use the website you made. It has been said to me before, "Your real experience starts now."
3. Not everyone who helps you has your best interest in mind. Most people have their own agendas, which isn't a bad thing, but it can be frustrating.
4. The post-nest transition can be quite a weird and lonely time... Since no one else will admit this.
5. Get your finances straight now, or you will regret it later. That means: get out of debt, create a budget and stick to it, and oh, be responsible. This isn't something I've learned first hand, but I've had a lot of older adults tell me.
6. Transitioning from Virginia Tech dining to the real world sucks. Most places are not within walking distance, and most aren't as good. (If you're still at Virginia Tech, please enjoy West End, Owens, Turner Place, and Squires while you can.)
7. Freedom is real. Post college, you are free to do whatever you want to do, and no one will stop you. It's amazing. Homework is no more, so you're only bound to the time you work; all other time is yours to choose how to spend.
8. Parents are the greatest resource out there. Nothing more needs to be said.
9. You need credit to do just about everything. In some cases, you may need up to 3-4 lines of credit for 12-24 months.
10. You're not alone in this. I promise.
